Summer Orchestra Camp 2021

#POK2021

Ljubljana, Ptuj

August 2021

Event

Young musicians of Slovenia were brought together with an intensive music programme and artistic workshops that stimulated the creativity, playfulness and openness of young people during ten days of socialising. On 25 August, the concert took place as part of the Days of Poetry and Wine festival in Ptuj, and on 26 August, the concert was part of the Ljubljana Festival programme and took place in Ljubljana's Congress Square. The concert in Ljubljana was recorded by RTV Slovenia for its programme. During the camp, a parallel project Vivaldi / Uncertain Four Seasons was prepared by the more experienced musicians of the orchestra - members of the chamber ensemble Camerata SMO.
Among other things, we gave a special private concert with saxophonist Vasko Atanasovski and his son Ariel Vei Atanasovski, who played guitar and presented his own compositions together with his father. All camp participants visited Kino Šiška, where they listened to the Vivaldi / The Restless Four Seasons concert, which we also recorded.

Implementation

This year, the art workshops were organised in cooperation with the Pioneer Home - Centre for Youth Culture and EnKnapGroup & Španski borci - Ljubljana Moste Culture Centre. We designed the content in such a way that the participants got to know each other better and faster, broadened their horizons, became more attentive to other arts and skills, and became more confident even in an environment that shakes them a bit out of the zone of the most comfortable habits and behaviours. All of these activities were supervised by animators or assistants. This year's participants were Vasko Atanasovski / musical improvisation, Urša Strehar Benčina / theatre improvisation, Natalia and Ravil Sultanov / circus workshop, EnKnapGroup - Tuza Tamas / movement and body, Eva Jeraj / art workshop.

The intensive music programme with sectional rehearsals, group rehearsals, rehearsals of the whole orchestra with guests and chamber music was conducted by renowned Slovenian musicians, professors and members of our most prominent symphony orchestras as well as former participants of our international activities. The mentors for musical instruments were: Matej Haas / first violin, Dejan Gregorič / second violin, Yasumichi Iwaki / viola, Katarina Jericijo / cello, Žiga Trilar / double bass, Monika Volarič / flute, Monika Babič / oboe and English horn, Andraž Jagodic / clarinet and bass clarinet, Matjaž Drevenšek / saxophone, Tara Lešnik / bassoon, Sarah Akif / horn, Jure Gradišnik / trumpet, Žan Tkalec / trombone, Nejc Kurbos / bass trombone, Petra Vidmar / percussion and timpani. The orchestra was led by conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh.
This year we organised 12 hours of artistic workshops, 9 hours of sectional rehearsals, 34 joint orchestral rehearsals and two concerts for the participants of SMO POK2021. In total, we have invested at least 50 hours in the preparation and performance of the programme with the Katalena group. We performed a programme including works by Slovenian composers Danilo Bučar and Primož Ramovš and songs arranged for symphony orchestra by Katalena. By selecting their compositions from all the albums, we underlined the 20th anniversary of this unique Slovenian ensemble and added a symphonic dimension from the pen of composer and arranger Matija Krečič. The programme was designed by SMO artistic director Živa Ploj Peršuh.

There were two SMO concerts:

On 25 August the concert was part of the Days of Poetry and Wine festival in Ptuj, on 26 August the concert was part of the Ljubljana Festival programme and was performed at the Congress Square in Ljubljana. The concert in Ljubljana was recorded by RTV Slovenia for its programme.

A parallel project Vivaldi / The Four Seasons of Uncertainty was running during the camp.
Camerata SMO (older participants and associate members) invested 17 hours in the preparation and performance of the concert. The concert took place on 20 August 2021 at Kino Šiška, where we recorded it in our own production and held a press conference and a talk afterwards with moderator Jureto Longyko and guests, conductor Živa Ploj Peršuh, soloist violinist Maja Horvat and cellist Ariel Veijo Atanasovski, and Kino Šiška director Simon Kardum. The project was presented to the general public globally during the United Nations Environment Conference in Glasgow on 1 November 2021.

Among other things, we gave a special private concert with saxophonist Vasko Atanasovski and his son Ariel Vei Atanasovski, who played guitar and presented his own compositions together with his father. All participants visited Kino Šiška, where they listened to the concert Vivaldi / The Four Seasons of Uncertainty.
